This watercolour painting depicts a long exposure of the Lagoon Nebula. An active stellar nursery in the constellation Sagittarius, about 5,000 light-years from Earth. It can be faintly seen under a dark sky, and without magnification, in the direction of the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. It is classified as an emission nebula, a type of nebula that is made of ionized gases. The pink tone can only be seen with long exposure photography, and appears grey when viewing with the human eye due to the eye’s poor sensitivity to low light levels.
